Grove City wins Saint Vincent Invitational

LATROBE, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's cross country team won the Saint Vincent Invitational Saturday by pulling out a one-point win over runner-up California University of Pennsylvania. Grove City, which placed six runners in the top 20, accumulated 51 points while CUP finished with 52 team points.

Freshman Ella Smith (Becker, Minn./Becker) and classmate Sarah Fisher (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, for Grove City. Smith completed the course in 19 minutes, 32 seconds while Fisher followed in 19:38.

Junior Brigitte Fryan (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) earned eighth (20:16) while freshman Mary Kate Breese (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) took 16th in 20:34. Senior Rachel Nelson (Dover, Mass./Lexington Christian) placed 18th (20:45) and freshman Mary Seward (Elizabethton, Tenn./Science Hill) earned 19th in 20:59.

Saint Vincent's Ivette Mejia won the individual race with a time of 19:19. One-hundred forty-two runners competed in the event.

It is Grove City's second team title of the 2009 season. The Wolverines also finished first at the California (Pa.) Invitational September 5.

Grove City will pursue its third title of the season next Saturday, October 3 at the Pitt-Greensburg Invitational.
