Wolverines win Pitt-Greensburg Invitational

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's cross country team earned its third team title of the 2009 season Saturday afternoon as the Wolverines won the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Invitational. Grove City had just 17 team points in winning the 11-team event. Geneva finished a distant second with 79 points.

Grove City placed seven runners in the top eight in Saturday's meet. Freshman Sara Fisher (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) earned the individual title with a victorious time of 24 minutes, 23 seconds. It is Fisher's first collegiate title.

Classmate Ella Smith (Becker, Minn./Becker) took second in 24:39 while junior Emily Pierce (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon Central) captured third with a time of 24:57.

Freshman Mary Kate Breese (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) and junior Brigitte Fryan (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) tied for fifth with a time of 25:35. Senior Rachel Nelson (Dover, Mass./Lexington Christian) placed seventh (25:53) while freshman Mary Seward (Elizabethton, Tenn./Science Hill) captured eighth in 25:56.

Grove City entered the meet ranked 32nd nationally in the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III poll. The Wolverines will compete in the Oberlin Inter-Regional Rumble October 17.
