Grove City earns 5th; Smith qualifies for NCAAs
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's cross country team placed fifth out of 50 teams at the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships Saturday afternoon, hosted by Carnegie Mellon University at Cooper's Lake Campground. The Wolverines accumulated just 170 team points to earn fifth. Johns Hopkins won the team title with 68 points, followed by Dickinson (126), Elizabethtown (140) and Haverford (168).
Sophomores Ella Smith (Becker, Minn./Becker) qualified for next week's NCAA Division III Championships by finishing 13th overall. Smith completed the six-kilometer course in 22 minutes, 46.6 seconds. She also earned All-Mideast Region honors by finishing in the top 35.
Sophomore Sara Fisher (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) also earned All-Region distinction by finishing 20th in the 314-runner field. Fisher finished the course in 23:01.4.
Senior Emily Pierce (Lisbon, N.Y./Lisbon) placed 38th overall with a time of 23:38.2 while classmate Brigitte Fryan (Canton, Ohio/Massillon Jackson) finished 44th with a time of 23:55.7.
Senior Kate McRoberts (Green, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) took 55th (24:05.0), three spots ahead of junior Mary Rachel Robbins (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport). Robbins finished 58th in 24:07.7.
Sophomore Hillary Wilson (Solon, Ohio/Solon) rounded out the Grove City effort by finishing 125th with a time of 25:27.2.
Johns Hopkins junior Cecilia Furlong won the individual race with a time of 21:57.2.
Grove City is under consideration for a team invitation to next Saturday's NCAA Division III Championships in Waverly, Iowa. Wartburg College is the host institution.
