Wolverines capture 5th in region

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. -- The Grove City College women's cross country team captured fifth place at the 56-team NCAA Mideast Region Championships, hosted by DeSales University Saturday afternoon. The Wolverines finished the meet with 289 team points. By finishing fifth, Grove City is now under consideration for an invitation to next week's national championships. The national invitations will be announced Sunday night.

Junior Ella Smith (Becker, Minn./Becker) earned All-Mideast Region honors by placing 19th overall. She covered the six-kilometer course in 23 minutes, 42 seconds. Dependent upon the national team invitations, Smith could receive an individual invitation to the NCAA Championships.

Senior Mary Rachel Robbins (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) finished 49th for Grove City, recording a time of 24:28. Junior Mary Kate Breese (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) earned 63rd (24:45) and junior Anna Dunsworth (Erie, Pa./Strong Vincent) finished 75th with a 24:56 clocking.

Sophomore Laurel Skorup (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich) finished 86th for Grove City with a time of 25:10. Junior Hillary Wilson (Solon, Ohio/Solon) captured 114th place in 25:41 and sophomore Cayla Clawson (York, Pa./Central York) took 167th in 26:25. A total of 335 runners competed in the race.

Dickinson sophomore Taylor Ludman earned medalist with a victorious time of 22:33. Johns Hopkins won the team title with 78 points, followed by Dickinson (99), Elizabethtown (108) and Haverford (120).

Grove City also placed fifth at the regional championships in 2010.
