Grove City's Phillips wins javelin at Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Junior Rory Phillips (Kane, Pa./Kane) captured first place in the javelin throw at the Mount Union Invitational Saturday afternoon, highlighting the Grove City College men's track and field team's performance at the unscored meet.

Phillips, who provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III championships Saturday at Carnegie Mellon with a throw of 188 feet, 4 inches, won Saturday's competition with a throw of 183-2. It is Phillips' fourth javelin victory in as many meets this season.

Senior Nick Ondrasik (Brookville, Pa./Brookville) earned runner-up honors in the triple jump, leaping 43 feet. He also took ninth in the long jump with a mark of 18-8 1/2.

Senior Josh Christy (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) placed third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 58.39 seconds while senior Ryan Mitchell (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) finished third in the steeplechase (9:50.8). Also for Grove City, junior Steve Brown (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim) finished sixth in the 5000 (16:05.5) while freshman Matthew George (Tyrone, Pa./Bellwood-Antis) cleared 12 feet in the pole vault to tie for seventh place.
