Thiel nips Grove City for PAC men's track title

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's track and field team saw its four-year run as Presidents' Athletic Conference champion come to an end Saturday at Westminster' College's Harold Burry Stadium as Thiel claimed the 2003 PAC men's track and field championship by earning 178 team points, six better than the runner-up Wolverines. 

Senior distance standout Ryan Mitchell (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) earned the conference's outstanding performer award after earning three first-place finishes. Mitchell won the 1500 (4:13.16), 3000 steeplechase (10:17.75) and 5000 (16:31.33), posting a meet-high 30 individual points. 

Five other Wolverines earned conference championships Saturday. Junior Steve Brown (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim) won the 10,000 in a time of 34:36.20 while senior Jeb Schreiber (Enon, Ohio/Oil City, Pa.) won the 400 hurdles in 57.63. Junior Rory Phillips (Kane, Pa./Kane) claimed the javelin title with a throw of 186 feet, 6 1/2 inches.  

Senior Nick Ondrasik (Brookville, Pa./Brookville) jumped 43 feet to win the triple jump while freshman Matthew George (Tyrone, Pa./Bellwood-Antis) won the pole vault with a mark of 13-1 3/4. 

Brown also took second in the 5000 while senior Josh Christy (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) took second in the 110 high hurdles. Sophomore Luke Henry (Knox, Pa./Keystone) placed second in the 800 with a time of 2:02.54 while freshman Dan Chittick (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) took second in the 1500 in 4:14.83.

Junior Drew Martin (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) took second in the long jump (19-9 1/2), third in the 110 hurdles (16.60), fourth in the triple jump and fifth in both the high jump and 200. Schreiber took fourth in the high jump and high hurdles, fifth in the triple jump and sixth in the 400. 

Freshman Jon Essel (East Hartland, Conn./The Gilbert School) took fourth in the 10,000, one spot ahead of sophomore Chris Lee (Pompton Plains, N.J./Trinity Christian). Senior Dustin Dimit (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) finished fourth in the steeplechase. 

Ondrasik also finished sixth in the high jump while junior Mike Richards (Brookville, Pa./Brookville) finished sixth in the 800. Junior Dan Corsi (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) took sixth in the discus and sophomore David Bolls (West Palm Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman) finished sixth in the high hurdles.

Westminster (166) took third while Washington and Jefferson (23) and Bethany (17) rounded out the field.
