Phillips wins javelin at Western Penn Championships

PITTSBURGH -- Senior Rory Phillips (Kane, Pa./Kane) won the javelin throw Saturday, helping the Grove City College men's track and field team finish 10th at the 15-team Western Pennsylvania Championships at Carnegie Mellon University's Gesling Stadium. The Wolverines earned 28 team points.

Grove City finished fifth among the seven NCAA Division III schools in attendance. The field also included three Division I teams, four Division II teams and one NAIA team. Robert Morris finished first with 195 points while Duquesne was second at 141.

Phillips fired the javelin 195 feet to earn first place. 

Senior Steve Brown (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim) took third in the 10,000 with a time of 33 minutes, 49 seconds while freshman Sam Dippold (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) finished fourth in the 400 hurdles (56.72). 

Senior Dan Corsi (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) placed fifth in the discus with a toss of 128 feet, 9 1/2 inches, three places ahead of junior teammate Pete Franklin (Jamestown, N.Y./Southwestern Central), who marked at 127-0. Franklin also finished ninth in the shot put (42-7). 

Senior Drew Martin (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) tied for eighth in the long jump, reaching 21-3/4.
