Grove City takes 3rd at own invitational

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's track and field team placed third out of five teams Wednesday afternoon in its own Grove City Invitational at Robert E. Thorn Field.

The Wolverines earned 114 team points, trailing only Carnegie Mellon (174) and Geneva (156). Westminster finished fourth with 50 points while Waynesburg took fifth with 21 points. 

Two Grove City athletes earned first-place finishes. Senior Rory Phillips (Kane, Pa./Kane) won the javelin with a toss of 192 feet, 9 inches while freshman Matt Klein (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) won the pole vault, clearing 11-0.

Klein led a 1-2-3 sweep in the pole vault as sophomore Caleb Smith (Oil City, Pa./Oil City) took second (10-0) and sophomore Matt George (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood-Antis) placed third. George also cleared 10-0.

Sophomore Dan Chittick (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) took second in the 1500 with a time of 4:21.34 while freshman Seth Fox (Ford City, Pa./Ford City) earned runner-up in the 100 dash (10.94 seconds). Senior Drew Martin (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) took third in the 110 hurdles (15.98) and cleared 5-6 to finish fourth in the high jump.

Senior Dan Corsi (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) took third in the javelin (158-7) and fourth in the discus (120-9) while freshman thrower Bob Perri (Washington, Pa./Trinity) finished third in the shot put with a mark of 42-3 3/4. Junior Pete Franklin (Jamestown, N.Y./Southwestern Central) placed fourth in the shot (40-11 1/2) and fifth in the discus (115-9). 

Klein added a fourth-place finish in the javelin, producing a toss of 151-6. Sophomore Randy Fulton (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield) took fourth in the long jump, leaping 18-10 1/2. 

Several other Grove City athletes produced top-five finishes on the track. Freshman hurdler Sam Dippold (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) finished fourth in the 400 hurdles (58.86), one place ahead of classmate Will Coglianese (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills), who turned in a time of 61.29 seconds. 

Freshman sprinter Yu Kuwabara (Owings Mills, Md./University, W. Va.) took fourth in the 200 dash (23.87) while senior distance standout Steve Brown (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim) finished fifth in the 5000 with a time of 16:39. 

Junior Luke Henry (Knox, Pa./Keystone) finished fifth in the 1500 with a time of 4:29.77. Grove City's 1600-meter relay team also finished third with a time of 3:31.72.

Grove City will compete in the Slippery Rock University Invitational Saturday afternoon.
