Grove City competes at Slippery Rock Open

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- Numerous Grove City College men's track and field athletes earned top 10 finishes Saturday afternoon at the Slippery Rock University Open at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium's Lennox Track.

Seniors Steve Brown (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim) and Rory Phillips (Kane, Pa./Kane) each earned fourth-place finishes to lead Grove City at the unscored meet. Brown took fourth in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 34:55. Phillips threw the javelin 191 feet, 2 inches, earning fourth place. 

Freshman hurdler Sam Dippold (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) finished sixth in the 400 hurdles (58.09) while sophomore Jon Essel (East Hartland, Conn./The Gilbert School) placed eighth in the 10,000 (36:11). Freshman Andrew Kloes (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) took eighth in the 5000 with a time of 17:07 while junior Luke Henry (Knox, Pa./Keystone) finished 10th in the 800 (2:00.69).

Throwers Dan Corsi (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) and Bob Perri (Washington, Pa./Trinity) each posted 11th-place finishes. A senior, Corsi took 11th in the javelin with a throw of 175-5 1/2. Freshman Perri put the shot 43-3 1/4 to earn 11th.

In the 400, freshman Mark Murchie (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) placed 11th (51.83), one spot ahead of classmate Yu Kuwabara (Owings Mills, Md./University, W. Va.), who ran a 51.89.

Grove City will host the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships at Robert E. Thorn Field next Saturday, April 24.
