Grove City finishes 2nd in PAC

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's track and field team had its string of five consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference championships come to an end Saturday afternoon at Grove City's Robert E. Thorn Field as Thiel upended Grove City to win the 2004 PAC title.

Thiel won the conference title with 198.5 points, holding off the Wolverines, who accumulated 187 points. Westminster took third with 142.5 points while Bethany (40) and Washington and Jefferson (8) completed the field.

Five Grove City athletes earned individual conference titles Saturday. Senior distance standout Steve Brown (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim) won both the 10,000 (34:33) and 5000 (16:25). It is Brown's fourth straight conference title in the 10,000.

Sophomore Dan Chittick (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) won the 1500 with a time of 4:13.60 while sophomore Matt George (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood-Antis) led Grove City's 1-2-3-4 sweep in the pole vault by clearing 13-0. Freshman Sam Dippold (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) won the 400 hurdles with a time of 56.35 seconds while senior Rory Phillips (Kane, Pa./Kane) won the javelin with a toss of 58.80 meters.

Freshman Andy Leuenberger (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) took second in the steeplechase (10:42) while junior Dan Bridger (Erie, Pa./McDowell) was runner-up in the pole vault, clearing 12-0. Freshman Matt Klein (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) took third in the pole vault (11-6) while sophomore Caleb Smith (Oil City, Pa./Oil City) finished fourth in the pole vault.

Dippold added a runner-up placement in the high hurdles with a time of 16.86 seconds.  

Junior Luke Henry (Knox, Pa./Keystone) placed second in the 800 (2:03.68) while junior Dan Adams (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) and senior Mike Richards (Brookville, Pa./Brookville) followed in third and fourth, respectively. Adams finished third in the 1500 while Henry took fourth.  

Freshman Will Coglianese (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) placed fourth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 59.02, one place ahead of sophomore Adam Wargo (West Farmington, Ohio/Champion). Freshman Andrew Kloes (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) finished fourth in the 5000 (17:02), one place ahead of freshman Erik Johnson (Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic). Johnson finished fourth in the steeplechase with a time of 10:53. 

Freshman Seth Fox (Ford City, Pa./Ford City) took fourth in the 100 dash with a time of 11.11 seconds while classmate Yu Kuwabara (Owings Mills, Md./University, W. Va.) finished fourth in the 400 (51.25). 

Senior Dan Corsi (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) finished fourth in the javelin with a toss of 47.81 meters while freshman Bob Perri (Washington, Pa./Trinity) took fourth in the shot (13.27 m). 

Grove City will wrap up the regular season next Saturday, May 1, with its annual Parents' Day Meet.
