Grove City caps regular season with Parents' Day Invite
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's track and field team concluded the 2004 regular season Saturday afternoon by hosting its annual Parents' Day Invitational at Robert E. Thorn Field.
Numerous Wolverine athletes turned in notable performance in the unscored meet. Senior Rory Phillips (Kane, Pa./Kane) won the javelin with a toss of 185 feet, 5 inches to become Grove City's lone individual winner.
The Wolverines' 1600-meter relay quartet of freshmen Seth Fox (Ford City, Pa./Ford City), Jesse Sunquist (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton), Yu Kuwabara (Owings Mills, Md./University, W. Va.) and Mark Murchie (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) closed the meet by winning that event in 3:25.16. That mark qualifies the quartet for the ECAC Championships in Williamstown, Mass. May 14-15.
Senior Steve Brown (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim) took second in the 10,000, one place ahead of senior Matt Kennedy (Allenwood, Pa./Morrison Academy, Taiwan). Kuwabara finished third in the 400, qualifying for the ECAC Championships with a season-best time of 50.77 seconds, while junior Luke Henry (Knox, Pa./Keystone) placed third in the 800 (2:00.86).
Freshman Will Coglianese (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) took third place in the 400 hurdles with a 58.74 while classmate Andrew Kloes (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) came home fourth in the 5000 (16:51.90). Senior Dan Corsi (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) finished fifth in the javelin with a toss of 160-8.
Also for the Wolverines, Murchie placed sixth in the long jump, reaching 20-5 1/2 while sophomore Matt George (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood-Antis) took sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 36-7 1/2. George tied for seventh in the pole vault, clearing 13-7. That qualifies him for the ECAC Championships.
Thirteen different schools participated in the annual event, including Division II schools Merychurst, Slippery Rock and Clarion, along with NAIA members Geneva, Walsh and Notre Dame (Ohio).
