Grove City opens season at West Penn Championships

PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College men's track and field team opened the 2005 season by competing in Carnegie Mellon's 15-team West Penn Championships Saturday at Gesling Stadium

Grove City finished 14th in the team standings with 9.5 points. Among the field were three NCAA Division I programs, three NCAA Division II programs and two NAIA institutions.

Freshman Jeremy Hurt (Verona, Pa./Riverview) posted Grove City's top finish Saturday by taking fourth in the high jump, clearing 6 feet.

Two Grove City relay teams also posted top 10 finishes. The Wolverines' 1600-meter relay quartet of sophomores Jesse Sunquist (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton), Seth Fox (Ford City, Pa./Ford City), Yu Kuwabara (Owings Mills, Md./University, W. Va.) and Mark Murchie (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) took sixth with a time of 3 minutes, 32.10 seconds.

Kuwabara, Fox, sophomore Dave Majewski (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint Central) and junior Adam Wargo (West Farmington, Ohio/Champion) took seventh in the 400-meter relay with a time of 44.46 seconds.

Fox took 10th in the 200 (23.56) while Murchie placed 10th in the 400 (51.82). Sophomore Andrew Kloes (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) took 10th in the 5000 with a time of 15:29.4 while sophomore Sam Dippold (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) finished 12th in the 400 hurdles (49.38).

Senior Luke Henry (Knox, Pa./Keystone) placed 13th in the 800 with a time of 2:03.11, one spot ahead of senior Dan Adams (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder), who posted a time of 2:03.25.

Freshman Justin Fowler (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) took 13th in the shot with a mark of 120-6 while freshman Bill Waugh (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) placed 14th in the shot (119-11). Freshman Dave Hodge (Enon Valley, Pa./Mohawk) reached 40-11 3/4 in the triple jump, good for 13th place.

The Wolverines will compete in the Geneva Invitational Friday afternoon.
