Grove City competes at SRU Invitational

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's track and field team competed in the Slippery Rock University Invitational at Bill Lennox Track inside N. Kerr Thompson Stadium Saturday. Ten different Wolverine athletes earned top-10 finishes while competing against programs from NCAA Division I, II and III as well as two NAIA institutions.

Sophomore Mark Murchie (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) led Grove City with a second-place finish in the 400, posting a time of 50.07 seconds. That time qualifies Murchie for the ECAC Championships next month. Senior Philip Hart (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) took third in the 100-meter dash in 11.21 seconds while junior Dan Chittick (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) finished third in the 1500 with a personal-best time of 4:07.91.

Freshman Chris Andrew (Bow, N.H./Bow) took third in the steeplechase (10:35.08) while classmate Jeremy Hurt (Verona, Pa./Riverview) finished third in the high jump with a mark of 6 feet, 2 inches.

Senior David Ackley (Haddon Heights, N.J./The King's Christian) took fifth in the steeplechase (11:02.93) while sophomore Yu Kuwabra (Owings Mills, Md./University, W. Va.) took sixth in the 400 with a time of 51.77. Sophomore Sam Dippold (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) took eighth in the 400 hurdles (57.65) while classmate Jesse Sunquist (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) placed eighth in the 400 dash (52.52).

Freshman Bob Rummel (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) took 10th in the high hurdles (16.26) and 12th in the 400 hurdles (58.65). Sophomore Will Coglianese (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) placed 11th in the 400 hurdles (58.36) while senior Dan Adams (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) finished 11th in the 800 (2:00.53).

In the pole vault, freshman Matt Kulinski (Oil City, Pa./Oil City) claimed 11th by clearing 13-7 while freshman Scott Mang (Erie, Pa./McDowell) cleared 13-0 to take 12th.

Grove City's 400- and 1600-meter relay teams each finished fourth. In the 400-meter relay, Kuwabara, junior Adam Wargo (West Farmington, Ohio/Champion), sophomore Dave Majewski (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint Central) and Hart posted a time of 44.68. In the 1600-meter relay, Dippold, Kuwabara, Sunquist and Murchie posted a time of 3:25.32. Both relays have qualified for the ECAC Championships, based on Saturday's effort.

Grove City will compete in the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Invitational next Saturday.
