Grove City reclaims PAC track and field crown

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- After a one-year hiatus, the Presidents' Athletic Conference men's track and field championship has returned to Grove City College.

Saturday afternoon at the 2005 PAC Championships, the Wolverines accumulated 223 team points to hold off defending conference champion Thiel, which had 183 points. Westminster (60), Washington and Jefferson (59), Bethany (50) and Waynesburg (12) completed the six-team field. It is Grove City's sixth PAC title in seven years.

Nine Grove City athletes scored at least 10 points for the Wolverines. Junior Dan Chittick (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) accumulated a team-high 22 points while fellow distance runners Dan Adams (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok Magruder) and Andrew Kloes (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) both added 18 points.

Chittick won the 1500 in a time of 4 minutes, 9.91 seconds and added third-place finishes in the 800 (2:02.07) and 5000 (16:33.34). Kloes captured the 5000 with a time of 15:54.17 and took second in the 10000 (34:05.50). Meanwhile, Adams earned runner-up finishes in both the 800 (2:00.96) and 1500 (4:15.32).

Senior co-captain Luke Henry (Knox, Pa./Keystone) won the 800 with a time of 2:00.71 while freshman Chris Andrew (Bow, N.H./Bow) won the 3000 steeplechase in 10:20.30. Sophomore Sam Dippold (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) won the 400 hurdles with a time of 56.62 seconds.

Grove City also crowned a pair of champions in the field. Freshman Matt Kulinski (Oil City, Pa./Oil City) won the pole vault, clearing 13-8 1/2 while classmate Jeremy Hurt (Verona, Pa./Riverview) won the high jump with a mark of 6-5 1/2.

Freshman Bob Rummel (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) took second in the 110 high hurdles (15.88) and fourth in both the 400 hurdles (58.95) and the triple jump (41-2 1/4). Junior Matt George (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood-Antis) took second in the pole vault (12-8 3/4), one spot ahead of freshman Scott Mang (Erie, Pa./McDowell), who cleared 12-2 3/4.

Freshman Dave Hodge (Enon Valley, Pa./Mohawk) placed third in the triple jump (42-8 1/4) while freshman Greg Kroleski (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) finished third in the steeplechase (10:46.11). Junior Jon Essel (East Hartland, Conn./The Gilbert School) claimed third place in the 10000 (35:56.03).

Sophomore Matt Klein (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) threw the javelin 158-4 to earn third place while freshman Justin Fowler (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) took third in the discus (136-7). Freshman Bill Waugh (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) finished fourth in the disc (130-1).

Senior Philip Hart (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) finished fourth in the 100 (11.44) while sophomore Mark Murchie (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) posted a time of 50.53 in the 400 to earn fourth place. Senior David Ackley (Haddon Heights, N.J./The King's Christian) took fourth in the steeplechase with a mark of 10:46.21 while senior Dan Bridger (Erie, Pa./McDowell) cleared 11-3 in the pole vault for fourth place.

Grove City's 400-meter relay team of sophomore Jesse Sunquist (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton), Dave Majewski (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint Central), Kulinski and Hart finished second with a time of 43.93 seconds. The Wolverines also took second in the 1600 relay as Adams, Sunquist, Kulinski and Murchie turned in a time of 3:30.12.

Second-year head coach Rev. Stan Keehlwetter earned the league's Coach of the Year award. Thiel senior Daryl Moore earned the conference's MVP award with 36.5 individual points.
