Grove City competes at West Penn Championships

PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College men's track and field competed in Carnegie Mellon University's West Penn Championships Saturday afternoon at Gesling Stadium. Grove City accumulated nine team points, good for 15th in the 16-team field. Among the teams participating were three NCAA Division I institutions and three NCAA Division II schools.

Grove City's 400-meter relay team of juniors Mark Murchie (Falls Church, Va./George Mason), Dave Majewski (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint Central), Yu Kuwabara (Owings Mills, Md./University, W. Va.) and Seth Fox (Ford City, Pa./Ford City) placed fifth with a time of 44.47 seconds.

Individually on the track, freshman Dan Spaulding (Spencerport, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) led Grove City with a seventh-place finish in the 10,000. Spaulding posted a time of 32:56.48. Junior hurdler Sam Dippold (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) took ninth in the 400 hurdles (58.86) while sophomore Bob Rummel (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) placed ninth in the 110 high hurdles (17.04).

Sophomore Greg Kroleski (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) finished 10th in the 10,000 (35:39.45) while Murchie took 11th in the 400 (52.65). Kuwabara placed 12th in the 400 (53.19).

In the field events, sophomore Dave Hodge (Enon Valley, Pa./Mohawk) placed seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 43 feet, 2 1/4 inches. Freshman Chris Huber (Ontario, Ohio/Ontario) finished eighth in the discus (126-2) while junior Bob Perri (Washington, Pa./Trinity) finished 10th in the shot put (44-8 3/4).

Grove City will compete in the Geneva Invitational Friday afternoon.
