Wolverines repeat as PAC champions

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's track and field team captured its second straight Presidents' Athletic Conference championship Saturday afternoon at Westminster College's Memorial Field. Grove City accumulated 186 1/3 team points to win the conference championship. Thiel took second with 156.33 points while Washington and Jefferson took third with 102. Westminster (54), Waynesburg (46.33) and Bethany (35) rounded out the field.

Three Grove City athletes earned individual titles for Grove City. Senior Dan Chittick (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) won the 1500 in 4 minutes, 6.22 seconds while sophomore Chris Andrew (Bow, N.H./Bow) won the 3000 steeplechase in 10:16.04. Sophomore Scott Mang (Erie, Pa./McDowell) cleared 13 feet, 10 1/2 inches to win the pole vault.

Sophomore Greg Kroleski (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) earned runner-up finishes in both the 5000 (16:32.98) and steeplechase (10:24.34). Sophomore Justin Fowler (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) took second in the discus with a throw of 147-1 while freshman Dan Spaulding (Spencerport, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) finished second in the 10,000 (35:28.55).

Junior Sam Dippold (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) took second in the 400 hurdles (55.84) while sophomore Bob Rummel (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) finished second in the high hurdles (15.77). Rummel also took third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 56.62 and fourth in the triple jump (43-10).

Fowler took third in the shot (45-11 1/4). Sophomore Dave Hodge (Enon Valley, Pa./Mohawk) took third in the triple jump (44-0) and fourth in the long jump (21-11 1/2). Sophomore Matt Kulinski (Oil City, Pa./Oil City) placed third in the pole vault, clearing 13-4 1/2.

Freshman Brett Kelly (Abingdon, Md./Bel Air) took third in the 1500 (4:15.52) while junior Andrew Leuenberger (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) finished third in the 5000 (16:43.37). Freshman Tim Su (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) finished third in the 10,000 with a time of 35:37, one spot ahead of senior Jon Essel (East Hartland, Conn./The Gilbert School), who posted a time of 36:08.07.

Numerous Grove City athletes earned fourth-place finishes for Grove City. Junior Bob Perri (Washington, Pa./Trinity) took fourth in the shot put with a heave of 45-5 while junior Jesse Sunquist (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) threw the javelin 161-10 to take fourth. Freshman Ryan McKinney (Butler, Pa./Knoch) cleared 11-10 1/2 to take fourth in the pole vault while junior Craig Hallman (Ellwood City, Pa./Riverside) took fourth in the high jump (5-10 1/2).

Also for Grove City, sophomore Nate Wool (Dillsburg, Pa./Bermudian Springs) finished fourth in the steeplechase (10:39.72). Andrew added a fourth-place finish in the 5000 (16:53.35) while sophomore Joey Cortez (Ellwood City, Pa./Ellwood City Lincoln) finished fourth in the 1500 with a time of 4:19.02.

Junior Mark Murchie (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) took fourth in the 400 (50.37) while freshman Darin Miller (Line Lexington, Pa./Christopher Dock) finished fourth in the 800 (2:03.13). Freshman Chris Allebach (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) grabbed fourth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 57.00.

Dippold, Sunquist, Murchie and junior Yu Kuwabara (Owings Mills, Md./University, W. Va.) closed the meet with a runner-up finish in the 1600-meter relay.

Head coach Dr. Stan Keehlwetter earned the league's Coach of the Year award for the second straight year. Grove City has won seven PAC titles over the past eight years.
