Grove City opens season at Roanoke

ROANOKE, Va. -- The Grove City College men's track and field team opened the 2007 season Saturday by placing fourth at the 10-team Roanoke Invitational. The Wolverines accumulated 106 team points. Host Roanoke won the team title with 163 total points.

Three Grove City athletes posted individual wins. Junior Josiah Leuenberger (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) won the 5000 in 15 minutes, 35.12 seconds. Two Grove City field men earned victories as senior Matt Klein (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) won the javelin with a toss of 49.31 meters (161 feet, 9 inches) and junior Matt Kulinski (Oil City, Pa./Oil City) cleared 4.27m (14-0) to win the pole vault.

Senior thrower Bob Perri (Washington, Pa./Trinity) took second in the shot put with a heave of 14.26m (46-9 1/2). Perri also took third in the discus with a throw of 35.94m (117-11).

Grove City's 1600-meter relay team of sophomore Chris Allebach (Souderton, Pa./Souderton), senior Sam Dippold (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills), senior Jesse Sunquist (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) and senior Mark Murchie (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) earned runner-up honors with a time of 3:34.21.

Allebach also took third in the 400 hurdles (58.87 seconds) while junior Chris Andrew (Bow, N.H./Bow) claimed third in the 5000 (16:27.45). Senior Andrew Leuenberger (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) placed fourth in the 5000 (16:33.29) while junior Bob Rummel (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) finished fourth in the 110 high hurdles (16.89).

Senior sprinter Dave Majewski (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint Central) took fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.68 seconds while sophomore Chris Huber (Ontario, Ohio/Ontario) threw the discus 35.45m (116-4) to placed fifth.

Grove City will compete in Clarion University's Early Bird Invitational Saturday, March 24.
