Wolverines compete at California Early Bird
CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- The Grove City College men's track and field team opened the northern portion of the 2007 schedule by competing in California University of Pennsylvania's unscored Early Bird Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Two Grove City field men earned individual victories. Junior pole vaulter Matt Kulinski (Oil City, Pa./Oil City) secured his second title in as many weeks by clearing 14 feet, 7 inches. In the shot put, senior Bob Perri (Washington, Pa./Trinity) took first with a heave of 48-9 1/2.
Junior Dave Hodge (Enon Valley, Pa./Mohawk) took second in the triple jump with a leap of 43-6. That effort qualifies Hodge for the ECAC Championships.
Sophomore Dan Spaulding (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) placed second in the 10,000 with a time of 33 minutes, 16.7 seconds.
Four Grove City athletes earned third-place finishes Saturday. Senior Scott Fichter (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) took third in the 100-meter dash in 11.46 seconds while junior Josiah Leuenberger (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) placed third in the 1500 (4:05.87). Also, junior Chris Andrew (Bow, N.H./Bow) placed third in the 5000 with a time of 16:24.42.
Junior Justin Fowler (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) claimed third in the discus with a throw of 141 feet. Fowler qualified for the ECAC Championships with that mark.
Senior Mark Murchie (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) placed fourth in the 400 (51.63) while sophomore Darin Miller (Line Lexington, Pa./Christopher Dock) crossed fifth in the 800 (2:01.41). Freshman Matt Ridge (Latrobe, Pa./Latrobe) took fifth in the shot by marking at 44-8 3/4.
Senior Dave Majewski (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint Central) finished sixth in the 100 (11.69) while sophomore Chris Allebach (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) placed sixth in the 400 hurdles (58.97).
Allebach, Fichter, Majewski and freshman Tim Palma (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) combined for a third-place effort in the 4x100 relay with an ECAC-qualifying time of 44.51 seconds. Allebach, Murchie, senior Yu Kuwabara (Owings Mills, Md./University, W. Va.) and senior Jesse Sunquist (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) finished third in the 4x400 relay (3:28.14).
Grove City will compete in the Wheeling Jesuit Invitational next Saturday, March 31.
