Grove City 2nd at Wheeling Jesuit Invitational

WHEELING, W. Va. -- Four Grove City men's track and field athletes earned individual victories Saturday, helping the Wolverines to a second-place finish at Wheeling Jesuit University's Bill Van Horne Invitational. Grove City accumulated 179 team points, trailing only host Wheeling Jesuit (191).

Two Grove City distance runners earned wins for Grove City. Junior Josiah Leuenberger (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) won the 5000 in 15 minutes, 20.55 seconds. That time qualifies Leuenberger for the ECAC Championships in May. Junior Chris Andrew (Bow, N.H./Bow) won the steeplechase in 9:57.27.

In the field, junior Matt Kulinski (Oil City, Pa./Oil City) cleared 4.27 meters (14 feet) to win his third straight pole vault title this season. Junior Dave Hodge (Enon Valley, Pa./Mohawk) won the triple jump with a mark of 13.06m (42-10).

Five Grove City athletes posted runner-up finishes individually Saturday. Sophomore Darin Miller (Line Lexington, Pa./Christopher Dock) took second in the 800 with a time of 1:58.61 while junior Bob Rummel (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) placed second in the 110 high hurdles in 15.95 seconds. Sophomore Chris Allebach (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) crossed second in the 400 hurdles with an ECAC-qualifying time of 57.02 seconds.

Senior Bob Perri (Washington, Pa./Trinity) placed second in the shot put with a mark of 15.17m (49-9) while freshman pole vaulter Scott Degelman (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) cleared 4.12m (13-6) to take second.

Allebach, senior Scott Fichter (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills), freshman Tim Palma (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) and senior Dave Majewski (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint Central) placed second in the 4x100 relay. That quartet posted an ECAC-qualifying time of 44.08 seconds.

Fichter also placed third in the javelin with a throw of 48.90m (160-5) while freshman Tony Clark (Stow, Ohio/Stow) took third in the discus with an ECAC-qualifying mark of 43.29m (142-0). Perri placed fourth in the discus (39.76m/130-5) while senior Matt Klein (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) threw the javelin 48.60m (159-5) to take fourth. Freshman Matt Ridge (Latrobe, Pa./Latrobe) claimed fourth in the shot put with a heave of 13.83m (45-4).

Hodge landed fourth in the long jump with a mark of 6.05m (19-10) while sophomore Ryan McKinney (Butler, Pa./Knoch) took fourth in the pole vault by clearing 3.66m (12-0). Sophomore Daniel Spaulding (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) placed fourth in the 5000 (16:21.82) while senior Mark Murchie (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) took fourth in the 400 (51.89).

Fichter finished fifth in the 100 (11.69) while Palma grabbed fifth in the 200 (23.59). Freshman Adam Beggs (Sandy Lake, Pa./Lakeview) placed fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 11.21m (36-9).

Grove City will host a quadrangular meet at Robert E. Thorn Field April 11.
