Four earn titles at Westminster Invitational

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Four members of the Grove City College men's track and field team posted individual victories Saturday at the Westminster College Invitational as the Wolverines made final preparations for the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships.

Junior Josiah Leuenberger (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) won the 1500 with a time of 4 minutes, 3.58 seconds while senior Andrew Kloes (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) captured the 5000 in 15:39.94.

In the field, junior Matt Kulinski (Oil City, Pa./Oil City) cleared 14 feet, 6 inches to win the pole vault. Senior Bob Perri (Washington, Pa./Trinity) won the shot put with a mark of 49-1.

Freshman Derek Kruse (Middlefield, Ohio/Cardinal) cleared 6 feet to take second in the high jump while classmate Scott Degelman (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) finished second in the pole vault (13-6). Junior Joey Cortez (Ellwood City, Pa./Ellwood City Lincoln) earned runner-up honors in the 1500 (4:16.14).

Grove City's 1600-meter relay team also placed second as sophomore Chris Allebach (Souderton, Pa./Souderton), senior Yu Kuwabara (Owings Mills, Md./University, W. Va.), freshman Tim Palma (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) and senior Jesse Sunquist (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) posted an ECAC-qualifying time of 3:27.19.

Kuwabara also placed third in the 400 (52.15) while Allebach qualified for the ECAC meet in the 400 hurdles with a time of 56.66. Sophomore Darin Miller (Line Lexington, Pa./Christopher Dock) took third in the 800 (2:00.41) while junior Bob Rummel (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) placed third in the 110 high hurdles (15.77). Rummel's time also surpasses the ECAC standard.

Junior Dave Hodge (Enon Valley, Pa./Mohawk) triple jumped 44-3 1/4 to place third, one spot ahead of Rummel (43-1 1/2). Sunquist threw the javelin 152-9, good for third place, while freshman Tony Clark (Stow, Ohio/Stow) placed third in the discus (136-6). Junior Justin Fowler (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) took fourth in the discus (136-0). Freshman Matt Ridge (Latrobe, Pa./Latrobe) claimed fourth in the shot put with a mark of 43-1 1/2.

Sophomore Ryan McKinney (Butler, Pa./Knoch) cleared 12-6 in the pole vault, earning fourth place, while senior Sam Dippold (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) finished fourth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 57.12 seconds. Allebach, Kuwabara, senior Scott Fichter (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and senior Dave Majewski (Lockport, N.Y./Starpoint Central) took fourth in the 400 relay (43.76). Sunquist also finished fifth in the 400 (52.94) while Perri took fifth in the shot put.

Grove City will host the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships next Saturday, April 28 at Robert E. Thorn Field.
