Grove City takes second at Wheeling Jesuit

WHEELING, W. Va. -- Three Grove City College athletes posted individual titles Saturday afternoon, helping the Wolverine men's track and field team earn second place at the 13-team Wheeling Jesuit Bill Van Horne Invitational. Grove City earned 149.5 team points and trailed only Penn State Behrend (185.5).

Sophomore Sean Domer (Indiana, Pa./United) led Grove City in the field by winning the javelin with a throw of 198 feet, 8 inches. That mark provisionally qualifies Domer for the NCAA Championships in May.

On the track, junior Dan Spaulding (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) won the 5000 in 16 minutes, 1.85 seconds while sophomore Royce Hyland (Boise, Idaho/Boise) captured victory in the 1500 (4:19.15).

Two Grove City field athletes recorded runner-up finishes. Senior Bob Perri (Washington, Pa./Trinity) took second in the shot put with a heave of 51-6 1/2. Perri provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with that effort. In the pole vault, senior Scott Mang (Erie, Pa./McDowell) cleared 14-5 1/4 to place second.

Senior Dave Hodge (Enon Valley, Pa./Mohawk) took third in the triple jump with a mark of 41-1 while junior Tim Su (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) finished third in the 5000 (16:11.98). Senior Bob Rummel (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) finished third in the 110 high hurdles (15.93) and fourth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 58.90.

Also for Grove City, freshman Cordell Oberholtzer (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) finished fourth in the 1500 (4:21.83) while junior Darin Miller (Line Lexington, Pa./Christopher Dock) placed fourth in the 800 (2:00.67). Junior Joe McCoy (Newark, Ohio/Newark) made his collegiate debut with a fourth-place finish in the 3000 steeplechase, posting a time of 11:18.13.

In the field, Perri took fourth in the discus (132-5) while freshman Pete Polesnak (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) took fourth in the javelin with a throw of 156-7. Junior Chris Huber (Ontario, Ohio/Ontario) finished fourth in the shot put (44-9) and also took fifth in the discus (126-2). Senior pole vaulter Matt Kulinski (Oil City, Pa./Oil City) cleared 13-9 1/4 to finish fourth.

Miller, sophomore Derek Kruse (Middlefield, Ohio/Cardinal), junior Chris Allebach (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) and freshman John Fite (Sunnyvale, Calif./Ad Fontes) took fourth in the 1600-meter relay with a time of 3:34.47. Kruse added a fifth-place finish in the 800 (2:00.87) while Allebach crossed fifth in the 400 hurdles (59.03). Sophomore Frankie Hourigan (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) finished fifth in the 1500 (4:22.08).

Grove City will return to action Saturday, April 5 at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.
