Wolverines fall out of PAC tourney

BETHANY, WV, April 20, 2000--Second-seeded Grove City's bid to advance to next week's PAC title game ended Thursday as fifth-seeded Thiel defeated the Wolverines, 10-6, in Bethany, West Virginia.

Grove City (11-11) spotted the Tomcats a 6-0 lead after two innings before rallying with a four-run fifth.  Both teams put up two runs in the sixth frame, then Thiel closed the scoring with an insurance pair in the seventh.

The Wolverines out-hit the Tomcats 11-9 with SS Mike Kashurba (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) going 3-for-5 in the nine-inning affair.  CF Adam Booth (Hartville, OH/Lake), 3B J.G. Louden (Morgantown, WV/University) and C Jeff Conaway (Freeport, PA/Freeport) had two knocks each.  Conway doubled to account for Grove City's lone extra-base hit.

Bill Hammel (Saxonburg, PA/South Kitsap) started for GCC but left with two down in the second (6 runs, 3 hits).  Mike Suchan (Independence, OH/Independence) stepped in and added four and one-third innings of strong relief, after blanking Washington & Jefferson over five-plus innings less than 24 hours earlier.   Suchan gave up just two unearned runs on four hits.  Dan Sumner (Neshannock, PA/Neshannock) took over in the fifth, but gave way after one out (2 runs, 1 hit) to Justin Magee (Grove City, PA/Grove City), who hurled two and two-thirds of scoreless relief.
