Wolverines rally in win over Thiel
GROVE CITY, PA, April 2, 2001--Sophomore 1B Steve Navarro (Gilbertsville, PA/The Hill School) sparked a six-run sixth inning with a lead-off homer -- his second of the season -- as the Wolverines came from behind to defeat visiting Thiel Monday afternoon, 10-4.
Grove City improved to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, while Thiel dropped to 3-17 overall, 0-6 in the PAC.
The Wolverines trailed 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth when senior C Jeff Conaway (Freeport, PA/Freeport) cracked a two-run homer -- his first of the year -- scoring junior 3B Mike Volchko (Akron, OH/Hoban), who singled. Conaway finished 2-for-4 in the game with three RBI and two runs scored, while Volchko went 2-for-3 and scored twice.
Navarro tied the game, 4-4, with his lead-off shot in the sixth. Grove City plated five more in the frame and added a run in the seventh.
Senior CF Adam Booth (Hartville, OH/Lake) collected two of the Wolverines' 12 hits in the game. Senior RF Nate Kauffman (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan), the league leader in home runs (6), went 1-for-3 with an RBI double.
The Wolverine bullpen shut out Thiel through the final five frames after senior RHP Brian Kaufold (Butler, PA/Butler) went five innings, allowing four runs (2 earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Senior LHP Mike Suchan (Independence, OH/Independence) came on in the fifth and notched the victory (1-1), surrendering just one hit in two innings of work. Freshmen RHPs Cliff Emery (Warren, OH/Champion) and Matt Kearney (New Castle, PA/Neshannock) each added a scoreless inning of relief.
Grove City, who has clubbed 11 home runs through its
first 10 games, plays at Marietta Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
