BETHANY, WV, April 19, 2001--The Grove City College Wolverines (9-8, 6-2 PAC) played 19 innings of baseball Thursday, beating host Bethany College (13-16, 7-2 PAC) in the 10-inning first game, 4-3, and falling in the nightcap, 5-4, in nine.

Freshman 2B Jake Cuthbert (Belle Vernon, PA/Belle Vernon), who collected three of the Wolverines' 13 hits in Game One, singled home senior RF Nate Kauffman (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) with the game-winning run in the top of the 10th.  Kauffmann and senior P J.G. Louden (Morgantown, WV/University) added two hits each.  Louden started on the hill and went 5-1/3 innings, allowing just one run on five hits, while striking out three and walking two. Freshman Matt Kearney (New Castle, PA/Neshannock) came on in the sixth and pitched 2-2/3 innings, fanning six and surrendering two runs on three hits.  Freshman Chris Hull (Chagrin Falls, OH/Chagrin Falls) earned the victory, closing the game with two scoreless innings of relief.   The game was tied 1-1 after seven innings.  Each squad scored twice in the eighth before the Wolverines won it in the 10th.

Sophomore 1B Steve Navarro (Gilbertsville, PA/The Hill School) cracked his third and fourth homers of the season in Game Two, helping the Wolverines take a 3-2 lead in the third, but Bethany salvaged a split with game-tying runs in the seventh and eighth before winning it in the ninth.  Junior Justin Magee (Grove City, PA/Grove City) posted another quality start, yielding four runs (1 earned) on three hits over seven innings.  Cuthbert took the loss in relief, allowing a run on one hit in the final 1-2/3.  Navarro finished the game 3-for-4, while senior CF Adam Booth (Hartville, OH/Lake) went 2-for-4.

Grove City travels to Washington & Jefferson College for a single nine-inning game Friday.
