GCC playoff hopes dimmed in extra-inning loss
GROVE CITY, PA, May 5, 2001--A comfortable lead and possible berth in the postseason slipped away in the top of the seventh inning Saturday as visiting Pitt-Bradford scored three runs to tie and added three more in the eighth to defeat Grove City, 8-5, before a Parents' Day crowd of over 300 at the College Field.
The Wolverines (18-10) and Panthers (28-9) learned earlier in the week that their two-game weekend series could determine which school advanced to the ECAC Division III Southern Division Championship May 11-13. Pitt-Bradford won yesterday's game, 13-4.
Senior RF Nate Kauffman (Canonsburg, PA/Canon-McMillan) jacked his 12th home run of the season and 23rd of his career -- both school records -- and finished 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored. Sophomore 1B Steve Navarro (Gilbertsville, PA/The Hill School) went 2-for-3.
Senior RHP J.G. Louden (Morgantown,
WV/University) started and went 6-1/3 innings, scattering four runs on six hits
while striking out four and walking four. Freshman RHP Matt Kearney (New
Castle, PA/Neshannock) closed out the seventh, allowing an unearned run on two
hits. Senior LHP Mike Suchan (Independence, OH/Independence) surrendered
three runs on four hits in the eighth.
