Wolverines thump Pitt-Greensburg
by Greg Knowlden, sports information student assistant

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team (2-3) got a lead early, offensive output late, and a stellar pitching performance from freshman Ryan Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) as they won 9-1 against the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg Bobcats.

Freshman outfielder Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) punctuated the afternoon with a three-run home run to right-center field, the first of his career, to finish the scoring.

A second-inning double by sophomore catcher Travis Mincey (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) scored sophomore third baseman Jonathan Mycyk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy), who led off with a two-base hit.  Mincey later scored on continuing action after an infield single by freshman center fielder Jason DeMeo (Washington, Pa./Trinity).

The Wolverines tagged on a run in the fifth inning, and then scored three unearned runs in the next frame as Pitt-Greensburg committed four errors.  DeMeo’s two-out single drove in two runs.

Carr surrendered his only run in the top of the seventh.  His afternoon included nine strikeouts against three walks, and he allowed just six hits.  Junior Sean O’Donnell (Brackenridge, Pa./St. Joseph) struck out the side looking in the eighth and did not allow a run in his two innings.

Junior second baseman Jake Cuthbert (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) went 3-for-4 with a double, and sophomore outfielder Michael McMillen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) was 2-for-4.  DeMeo had two hits and drove in two, while Mincey and freshman shortstop Mike Ritter (Moon, Pa./Moon) scored twice.

The Wolverines open Presidents’ Athletic Conference play Friday when they host Bethany for a 9-inning contest at 3:00.  They will visit the Bison for a doubleheader Saturday.
