Wolverines drop pair at Bethany in PAC doubleheader

BETHANY, W. Va. -- Despite a combined 26 hits in two games, the Grove City College baseball team fell to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with a pair of 7-6 losses at Bethany Thursday afternoon.

In the opener, an error, two sacrifices and a wild pitch pushed Rich Majewski home with the game-winning run for Bethany (7-11, 3-0 PAC). In the second game, Bethany jumped out to a 5-0 lead and then thwarted Grove City's comeback effort in the bottom of the seventh.

Grove City (2-6, 0-3 PAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first game as freshman shortstop Mike Ritter (Moon, Pa./Moon) cracked a two-run single that scored freshman Jason DeMeo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) and junior Jake Cuthbert (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon).

In the top of the fifth, Grove City grabbed a 5-3 lead on back-to-back solo homers from sophomore first baseman Joel Diller (Hartville, Ohio/Marlington) and Ritter. Both Diller and Ritter went 4-for-4 in the first game with Ritter knocking in four runs. Ritter pushed Grove City's lead to 6-4 in the top of the sixth with a double that scored Cuthbert, who went 2-for-4 as part of Grove City's 16-hit onslaught.

Sophomore catcher Travis Mincey (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) went 2-for-4 in the opener while DeMeo also had a pair of hits. Sophomore Luke Lester (Dover, Ohio/Dover) took the loss in relief of starter Mike Gundy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), who pitched 3 1/3 innings. Freshman Ryan Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) struck out three in 2 1/3 innings before yielding to Lester.

Grove City fell behind early in the second game but put together a four-run fourth inning. Cuthbert led off with a single and freshman outfielder Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) reached on catcher's interference. After a double steal, Cuthbert scored on a sacrifice fly from Diller. Ritter singled in Ott while a double from junior Greg Grupp (Harmony, Pa./Slippery Rock) scored Ritter. Grupp came home on a run-scoring single by sophomore third baseman Jonathan Mycyk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy).

Bethany extended its lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the sixth. DeMeo opened the top of the seventh with a single and scored on Cuthbert's triple. Cuthbert crossed the plate on a wild pitch before Bethany closer Matt Raiti quelled the rally.

Grove City visits Washington and Jefferson Friday for a single PAC game starting at 3 p.m. at Falconi Field.
