WASHINGTON, Pa. -- At Falconi Field, the Grove City
College baseball team (3-6, 1-3 PAC) had a breakout offensive game as the
Wolverines pounded out 18 hits in defeating Washington and Jefferson 16-4 Friday
afternoon in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
After holding a 3-2 edge through three innings, Grove City exploded for 10 runs over the next three frames. Freshman shortstop Mike Ritter (Moon, Pa./Moon) opened the fourth with a single and junior left fielder Greg Grupp (Harmony, Pa./Slippery Rock) followed with a double.
Sophomore catcher A.J. Stedford (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) singled home Ritter; Grupp scored on a suicide squeeze, and a double by freshman center fielder Jason DeMeo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) plated Stedford. Stedford celebrated his first career start by going 3-for-4 with five runs batted in. Grupp, meanwhile, went 5-for-6 on the afternoon with a pair of doubles and scored four runs.
Later in the inning, a single by junior second baseman
Jake Cuthbert (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) extended Grove City's lead to
7-2.
In the fifth, Ritter and Grupp drilled back-to-back
doubles, with Grupp later scoring on a wild pitch.
Stedford’s two-out, bases loaded triple blew the game wide open in the
sixth.
Grove City finished the scoring when they strung together
four hits in the eighth inning to push three men across as sophomore Michael
McMillen's (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) pinch-hit double highlighted the
inning.
Junior Sean O’Donnell (Brackenridge, Pa./St. Joseph’s) struck out seven in as many innings to record the win. Freshman Eric Arnesen (Princeton, N.J./Timothy Christian) finished the contest with two scoreless innings.
Ritter continued his hot hitting with a 3-for-5 day and three runs scored, while DeMeo had a pair of doubles, scored twice and added an RBI in his return to his hometown.
