GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team leveled its record in Presidents’ Athletic Conference play at 3-3 by sweeping a doubleheader against visiting Washington and Jefferson Saturday.  The Wolverines captured the first game, 20-1, and then held off a Presidents’ rally to win the nightcap 6-4.

In the opener, freshman center fielder Jason DeMeo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) started the bottom half of the first with his first career home run.  A single by junior pitcher Greg Grupp (Harmony, Pa./Slippery Rock) drove in two runners.

The Wolverines extended their lead to 5-0 after two innings and struck for nine more runs in the third.  Freshman shortstop Mike Ritter (Moon, Pa./Moon) homered to left-center, and later singled home two men as the Wolverines sent 13 batters to the plate.  Freshman outfielder Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette), Grupp and sophomore third baseman Jonathan Mycyk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) also provided run-scoring hits in the frame.

The Wolverines scored four in the third to take  an early lead.  Sophomore outfielder Michael McMillen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and DeMeo set the table with singles, and a two-out double by sophomore first baseman Joel Diller (Hartville, Ohio/Marlington) and single by Ritter each scored two runs.

The Presidents were able to take advantage of two Grove City errors in the sixth as the knotted the score at 4 all.  However, the Wolverines responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half to reclaim the lead.

Senior catcher Matt Skipper (Canton, Ohio/Canton South) stroked the eventual game-winning single to score Ritter, and Mycyk came home on a passed ball to provide the Wolverines' sixth run.

Ritter had five hits, five runs, and six runs batted in on the day to pace the offense.  Grupp was 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs to help his own cause in the first game.  Mycyk has hit in each game this season, and DeMeo extended his hitting streak to ten games.  Cuthbert saw his nine game streak come to a close in the nightcap.
