Wolverines earn split with Waynesburg

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Grove City College baseball team (7-7, 5-4 PAC) remained a half-game above .500 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with a doubleheader split against visiting Waynesburg Saturday. Waynesburg (14-12-1, 5-4 PAC) downed Grove City 10-1 in the opener before the Wolverines rebounded for a 7-4 win in the nightcap.

In the nightcap, freshman shortstop Mike Ritter (Moon, Pa./Moon) belted a pair of two-run homers to spark the Grove City offense. The Wolverines trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the first center fielder Jason DeMeo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) reached on an error and eventually scored on a groundout from second baseman Jake Cuthbert (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon). 

With two outs sophomore first baseman Joel Diller (Hartville, Ohio/Marlington) singled and then scored on the first of Ritter's two blasts. 

Waynesburg halved the lead in the top of the third but the Wolverines responded with a four-run outburst. DeMeo opened the inning by reaching on another error. Freshman Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) singled in DeMeo and then scored on a Diller triple. Ritter capped the inning with his second two-run homer of the game.

Junior left-hander Chris Hull (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) picked up the victory by allowing one earned run in five innings, improving to 2-1. Sophomore Luke Lester (Dover, Ohio/Dover) recorded the final six outs in relief of Hull.

Grove City fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first and could not recover in the first game of the doubleheader. In the bottom of the seventh, pinch hitter Greg Hrebinko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) singled, advanced to second on a passed ball and came home on a pinch-hit single by freshman Patrick Irwin (Knox, Pa./Keystone). 

Junior Greg Grupp (Harmony, Pa./Slippery Rock) took the loss, allowing six runs in four innings. Sophomore third baseman Jonathan Mycyk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) struck a pair of singles in game one.
