GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team (13-12) completed their Presidents' Athletic Conference consolation series sweep of Washington and Jefferson on Saturday afternoon, edging the Presidents 3-1 in the first game and then pounding out 26 hits in a 27-5 victory in the second.

In game one, freshman starter Ryan Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) was dominant, allowing just an unearned run and six hits while striking out seven men to earn the complete game win.

The Presidents struck for their run in the third, and the Wolverines were unable to respond until the bottom of the fifth.  A poor throw on a potential inning-ending double play put freshman center fielder Jason DeMeo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) on second, and junior second baseman Jake Cuthbert (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) drilled a double to right-center to level the score at 1-1.

In the sixth, freshman shortstop Mike Ritter (Moon, Pa./Moon) doubled over the center fielder and scored on a single by junior DH Greg Grupp (Harmony, Pa./Slippery Rock).  Grove City added an insurance run on a two-out triple by sophomore catcher A.J. Stedford (Beaver, Pa./Beaver).

The Wolverines’ attack struck quickly in the second game as Grove City scored 17 runs in the first two innings.  Cuthbert scored on a double by sophomore first baseman Joel Diller (Hartville, Ohio/Marlington), Ritter reached on the second error of the inning, and then Grupp and sophomore third baseman Jonathan Mycyk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) pounded back-to-back home runs to make the score 5-0.

Grove City opened the second with four straight extra-base hits.  Sophomore outfielder Michael McMillen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and DeMeo tripled. Doubles from Cuthbert and freshman outfielder Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, PA/South Fayette) followed.  Grupp had a two-run single, and McMillen later delivered a bases-clearing double as the Wolverines scored 12 runs on 11 hits in the frame.  Ritter completed the inning with a two-run single.

Freshman outfielder Greg Hrebinko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) blasted a homer in the fourth, the first of his career.  Diller launched his second home run of the season in the fifth.  Run-scoring hits by Grupp, freshman third baseman Mike McDonald (Ellwood City, Pa./Ellwood City) and senior catcher Matt Skipper (Canton, Ohio/Canton South) in the sixth completed the scoring.

Junior Sean O’Donnell (Brackenridge, Pa./St. Joseph) surrendered just two hits and struck out three in four innings to move his record to 3-0.

Grupp and Skipper had four hits, and Ott and Diller had three each in the second game.  Seven other Wolverines collected a pair of hits.  Grupp drove in five runs and Diller had three runs batted in to pace the offense.  Ott scored four runs and Cuthbert, Diller, Grupp, and Skipper each had three runs.

Grove City’s next action will be Tuesday night at Slippery Rock University.
