Hiram downs Grove City

HIRAM, Ohio -- The Grove City College baseball team (13-14) pounded 15 hits but dropped a 15-5 decision at Hiram College Wednesday afternoon. 

Hiram went ahead for good in the bottom of the first by scoring three unearned runs, and then put up five runs in the third inning. 

Sophomore outfielder Michael McMillen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) stroked a solo home run in the third, and junior DH Greg Grupp (Harmony, Pa./Slippery Rock) blasted a solo shot of his own in the fourth. 

A two-out double in the fifth by sophomore first baseman Joel Diller (Hartville, Ohio/Marlington) was followed by a run-scoring single by freshman shortstop Mike Ritter (Moon, Pa./Moon).  

In the sixth, sophomore catcher A.J. Stedford (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a base hit by freshman outfielder Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette).  Stedford also provided a run scoring single in the ninth. 

Freshman reliever Eric Arnesen (Princeton, N.J./Timothy Christian) scattered two singles between three strikeouts in the eighth. 

Grove City left 14 men on base in the contest, including a man in scoring position in six frames.  Grupp went  4-for-5 at the plate, while Stedford was 3-for-4.  Ott, Diller and McMillen each had a pair of hits. 

Junior Chris Hull (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) took the loss for Grove City.

The Wolverines will host Geneva Saturday afternoon for a Parents’ Weekend doubleheader.
