Wolverines end season with split

OBERLIN, Ohio -- The Grove City College baseball team concluded the 2003 season with a doubleheader split at Oberlin Tuesday afternoon. The Wolverines (14-15) dropped the opener 2-1 but rebounded for a 2-0 victory in the nightcap at Dill Field.

Junior Sean O'Donnell (Brackenridge, Pa./St. Joseph) took a no-hitter into the sixth in the second game and finished with a two-hit shutout, the first shutout of his career. O'Donnell fanned eight and did not issue a walk, improving to 4-0 on the season.

Grove City broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth when junior Greg Grupp (Harmony, Pa./Slippery Rock) led off with a double. Grupp then scored on a one-out single from sophomore first baseman Joel Diller (Hartville, Ohio/Marlington).

The Wolverines tacked on their second run in the seventh when freshman Jason DeMeo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) walked, moved to third on a Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) single and scored on the front end of a double steal.

Ott and fellow freshman Mike Ritter (Moon, Pa./Moon) both went 2-for-3.

O'Donnell faced just 24 batters, three above the minimum. In 30 innings this year, O'Donnell walked just five batters while fanning 24.

In the opener, freshman Ryan Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) fired six shutout innings but received a no-decision. Grupp cracked a solo homer in the top of the second, giving Grove City a 1-0 lead.

However, the Yeomen tagged relievers Luke Lester (Dover, Ohio/Dover) and Matt Kearney (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) for a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to seize victory. Kearney took the loss, dropping to 0-4 on the season.

Grupp and freshman third baseman Mike MacDonald (Ellwood City, Pa./Ellwood City) each went 2-for-3.
