Prexies sweep Grove City

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Washington and Jefferson Saturday afternoon. The Presidents won the opener, 4-2, then secured a 5-3 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, junior first baseman Joel Diller (Hartville, Ohio/Marlington) cracked a pair of doubles while sophomore Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) and senior Greg Grupp (Harmony, Pa./Slippery Rock) each doubled. Diller drove in Ott in the top of the fourth, scoring Grove City's first run. Diller then came home on Grupp's double, tying the game at 2-2.

However, Washington and Jefferson (7-6, 2-0 PAC) scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good.

Sophomore Ryan Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) fired a complete game for Grove City, allowing three earned runs in six innings. He struck out four.

In the nightcap, Washington and Jefferson broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning. Grove City halved the lead to 5-3 in the top of the seventh with one out but could get no closer. Junior third baseman Jonathan Mycyk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) doubled and singled while junior left fielder Michael McMillen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) belted a double.

Starting pitcher Chris Hull (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) pitched 4 1-3 innings, allowing just three hits. Hull did walk four batters, however. Junior Luke Lester (Dover, Ohio/Dover) and Erik Arnesen (Princeton, N.J./Timothy Christian) both pitched in relief.

Grove City (4-11, 1-2 PAC) is scheduled to host Washington and Jefferson Monday at 3 p.m. for a single 9-inning game.
