Grove City sweeps Westminster

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team improved to 5-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference by sweeping a doubleheader from visiting Westminster Thursday afternoon at College Field. Grove City (8-12 overall) lashed 21 hits en route to a 14-0 win in the opener, then pulled out a 5-3 victory in the second game.

Sophomore right-hander Ryan Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) allowed just one hit in six shutout innings to earn the victory in the opener. Carr allowed a leadoff single in the first inning, but after a force play and a caught stealing, Carr retired 13 consecutive batters. He also struck out five batters while issuing just two walks.

Offensively, eight Grove City players had multi-hit games as the Wolverines set a season-high hit total for the third time in four games. Sophomore right fielder Greg Hrebinko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) helped lead the way with three run-scoring singles and an RBI double in four at bats. Junior catcher A.J. Stedford (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) singled and scored twice, doubled and drove in two additional runs while junior first baseman Joel Diller (Hartville, Ohio/Marlington) doubled and singled. Junior third baseman Jonathan Mycyk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) doubled, singled and scored three runs.

Sophomore shortstop Mike Ritter (Moon, Pa./Moon) went 3-for-4 and scored three times while senior second baseman Jake Cuthbert (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon), sophomore center fielder Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) and senior DH Greg Grupp (Harmony, Pa./Slippery Rock) all had a pair of hits.

Freshman Eric Hull (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Grove City jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, then pushed the lead to 6-0 in the second. Mycyk's two-run double highlighted the Wolverines' four-run third inning. Grupp cracked a two-run single in the fourth as Grove City batted around in its five-run inning.

The Wolverines scored in each of the first three innings, grabbing a 5-0 lead. Ott and Grupp had run-scoring hits in the first while Ritter scored on an error in the second inning. Mycyk's two-run blast in the bottom of the third extended the lead to 5-0.

Senior right-hander Sean O'Donnell (Brackenridge, Pa./St. Joseph) earned the victory, allowing two earned runs in five innings. Junior set-up man Luke Lester (Dover, Ohio/Dover) allowed a run in the sixth while sophomore closer Erik Arnesen (Princeton, N.J./Timothy Christian) earned the save with a perfect seventh inning.

Ott doubled and singled while Cuthbert and junior Michael McMillen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) each doubled. Stedford added two more hits.

Grove City hosts PAC rival Waynesburg Friday at 3 p.m. for a single 9-inning game. The teams will play a doubleheader at Waynesburg Saturday afternoon.
