Grove City wraps up PAC action with split

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team concluded Presidents' Athletic Conference play Saturday by splitting a home doubleheader against Bethany at College Field. Grove City (11-17, 8-7 PAC) picked up an 8-6 win in the opener before falling in the nightcap, 8-2.

Bethany (19-15, 10-5 PAC) clinched the top seed in next week's PAC Tournament with the victory and will host the four-team tournament April 29-May 1. Grove City will be the No. 3 seed.

In the opener, Grove City blew open a scoreless game with a six-run fourth inning. The Wolverines lashed six hits and took advantage of three Bethany errors in the inning in batting around. Junior third baseman Jonathan Mycyk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) roped a two-run single that broke the scoreless tie. Later in the inning, senior second baseman Jake Cuthbert (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) and freshman left fielder Jarrett Wiggers (Panama, N.Y./Panama Central) both added RBI singles.

Cuthbert finished 3-for-4 while Wiggers went 2-for-3 in his second start of the season.

Grove City boosted its lead to 8-0 in the fifth as sophomore shortstop Mike Ritter (Moon, Pa./Moon) cracked a run-scoring double and Cuthbert had another run-scoring singles.

Bethany picked up four runs in the sixth off winning pitcher Ryan Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk), then added two more in the seventh against reliever Chris Hull (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls). However, junior Mike Gundy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) snuffed out Bethany's rally and earned his first save of the year.

Carr pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed four earned runs. He struck out eight.

In the nightcap, Hull and sophomore Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) each roped doubles but Grove City could not protect its early 2-1 lead. Bethany scored single runs in each of the first three innings, then broke the game open with a three-run fifth inning. The Bison out-hit Grove City, 15-7, in the second game.

Senior Sean O'Donnell (Brackenridge, Pa./St. Joseph) took the loss for the Wolverines, allowing four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. Luke Lester (Dover, Ohio/Dover), John Jacobs (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) and Dan Aloisio (Chicago, Ill./Wheaton Academy) all pitched in relief.

Grove City will visit Division II Slippery Rock Tuesday night for a 7:30 p.m. game.
