St. Vincent sweeps Grove City

LATROBE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at NAIA St. Vincent Thursday afternoon, falling 7-2 in the opener and 8-2 in the nightcap.

In Game One, Grove City took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as freshman DH Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) walked and eventually scored on a single from classmate Michael Busin (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock). However, the Bearcats scored four runs in the bottom of the first and limited Grove City to just one hit over the final six innings.

Sophomore lefty Jarrett Wiggers (Panama, N.Y./Panama Central) took the loss for Grove City (2-7), allowing five earned runs in two-plus innings. Senior Mike Gundy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) pitched four innings of relief and allowed two earned runs.

St. Vincent jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against Game Two starter Neil Hoagland (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch). Hoagland took the loss for Grove City while freshman Chris Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow) pitched 4 2/3 innings of relief.

St. Vincent held Grove City to just four singles in the nightcap.

Grove City will open Presidents' Athletic Conference play Friday afternoon at home against archrival Westminster in a single nine-inning game at 3 p.m.
