Grove City snaps skid

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team snapped its eight-game slide Monday afternoon by splitting a doubleheader Monday afternoon at Pitt-Greensburg. Grove City rallied from an early 3-1 deficit to pull out a 9-5 win in the opener. However, Pitt-Greensburg bounced back for a 13-5 win in Game Two.

In the opener, Grove City (3-14) scored eight runs over the final three innings. Senior third baseman Jonathan Mycyk (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side) opened the fifth with a home run, cutting UPG's lead to 3-2. Senior left fielder Michael McMillen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) singled and eventually scored on an infield hit by freshman second baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth).

Pitt-Greensburg reclaimed a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth but Grove City pulled ahead for good in the sixth with a pair of two-out runs. Freshman DH Ryan Jones (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) singled, stole second and scored on a Mycyk single. Mycyk moved to second on catcher's interference, swiped third on the front end of a double steal and scored on a wild pitch.

Jones ripped a two-run single in the seventh that extended the Wolverines' lead to 7-4. Two errors and a wild pitch eventually scored Jones and senior catcher A.J. Stedford (Beaver, Pa./Beaver).

In the bottom of the seventh, junior right-hander Mike Kennedy (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) earned the save after inheriting a bases-loaded, no-out situation. Senior starter Luke Lester (Dover, Ohio/Dover) pitched into the seventh and struck out five batters in six innings. He did not walk a batter.

Jones went a career-best 4-for-4 in the nightcap but Grove City could not recover from an early 6-0 deficit. Sophomore pitcher Neil Hoagland (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) allowed six runs in the first and took the loss. Five of the runs were unearned, however.

Freshman second baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) went 3-for-4 while Mycyk knocked in a pair of runs. Sophomore pitcher Eric Hull (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) allowed one run and two hits in three innings of relief while freshman Chris Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow) and sophomore Jarrett Wiggers (Panama, N.Y./Panama Central) both pitched in relief.

Grove City will play at La Roche Tuesday afternoon in a single, 9-inning non-conference game.
