La Roche nips Grove City, 8-7

PITTSBURGH -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped an 8-7 decision to host La Roche Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game at John Arnold Field.

A six-run sixth inning vaulted the Wolverines (3-15) to a 7-3 lead before the Redhawks rallied in the sixth and seventh innings. La Roche scored twice in the sixth, then pulled ahead with three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Freshman right fielder Ryan Jones (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) started the Wolverines' six-run outburst with a run-scoring double. Jones and junior Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) scored on a two-run double by freshman second baseman Jamie Skyrm (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Baptist), giving Grove City a 4-3 lead.

Skyrm scored Grove City's fifth run after a double from senior left fielder Michael McMillen (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny). Freshman DH Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) singled in McMillen. Pierrot, who went 3-for-4, eventually scored on a single by freshman third baseman Michael Busin (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock).

Junior shortstop Mike Ritter (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) and freshman catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) both doubled for Grove City.

Sophomore reliever Dan Aloisio (Chicago, Ill./Wheaton Academy) took the loss for the Wolverines after allowing five earned runs in 1 2/3 innings. Senior starter Mike Gundy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) allowed one earned run in five innings.

Sophomore reliever Justin Miller (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) retired all four batters he faced, including two strikeouts.
