Grove City sweeps Pitt-Greensburg

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team improved to 6-2 Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of non-conference rival Pitt-Greensburg at Ridilla Field. Grove City earned a 5-1 win over host Pitt-Greensburg in the opener, then earned a 9-2 win in the nightcap.

Senior Erik Arnesen (Princeton, N.J./Timothy Christian) earned the victory in the opener, striking out 13 batters in a complete-game effort. Arnesen took a shutout into the seventh inning and allowed just seven hits.

Grove City jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. Freshman second baseman Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee Davis) homered to lead off the game. In the top of the second, senior shortstop Mike Ritter (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) belted a solo homer.

Later in the second, junior center fielder Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) doubled home two runs. Schwamberger went 2-for-3 in the opener while sophomore DH Mike Hess (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) also doubled. Wilson also drove in two runs.

In the nightcap, senior right-hander Ryan Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) allowed two runs and five hits to earn his second win of the season. He struck out six in six innings. Senior reliever Mike Kennedy (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) pitched a scoreless seventh.

Schwamberger and sophomore third baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) each drove in three runs in Game Two. Pierrot and sophomore catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) both had two hits while sophomore DH Pat Messner (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) doubled and scored two runs.

Grove City will visit Penn State Behrend in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. Presidents' Athletic Conference play begins Friday at Bethany.
