Wolverines fall at Bethany, 7-6
BETHANY, W. Va. -- The Grove City College baseball team fell to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday afternoon with a 7-6 loss at PAC rival Bethany.
Bethany (3-12, 1-2 PAC) rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth against Grove City reliever Mike Kennedy (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls), who fell to 1-2 on the season. Sophomore Chris Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow) started for the Wolverines and allowed four earned runs in seven innings. He struck out six.
Sophomore catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) led Grove City's 10-hit attack with a 3-for-4 effort, including a double. Senior shortstop Mike Ritter (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) belted a two-run homer in the top of the seventh that gave Grove City a 6-5 lead.
Ritter also singled in the game while senior right fielder Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) went 2-for-3. Sophomore third baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) doubled for Grove City.
Grove City took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth as Mertz doubled and scored on a single by junior first baseman Dan Bartkowiak (Fredonia, N.Y./Fredonia). Two Bethany errors led to two more Grove City runs in the inning. An Ott sacrifice fly in the sixth inning scored sophomore DH Mike Hess (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth).
Grove City will visit Thiel in a single 9-inning game Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. in Greenville.
