Grove City holds off La Roche, 16-12

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team improved to 14-5 overall Tuesday afternoon with a 16-12 victory over visiting La Roche in non-conference action at College Field.

Sophomore third baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) set a new career high by driving in six runs as part of a 3-for-6 effort. Pierrot doubled twice in the win, including a three-run double in Grove City's four-run fifth inning.

Grove City led 12-2 after five innings but La Roche (13-11) chipped away at the Wolverine lead. La Roche scored three times in the sixth, once in the seventh and twice in the eighth. La Roche then scored four more runs in the ninth to pull to within 16-12. However, freshman reliever Matt Tindall (Copley, Ohio/Copley) induced a 1-6-3 double play to end the game. Tindall pitched 2/3 of an inning to earn his first career save.

Freshman Zach Hillegas (Bridgeport, W. Va./Bridgeport) earned the win for Grove City, allowing two runs in five innings. He struck out five and walked four.

Grove City broke a 2-2 tie with a six-run fourth inning. Sophomore catcher Mike Hess (Sewickley, Pa./Avonworth) highlighted the inning with a three-run homer to left, his first of the season. In the sixth, junior left fielder Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) cracked an RBI double, then scored on a Pierrot single. Schwamberger scored four runs as part of a 2-for-3 afternoon. He also drove in three runs.

Sophomore second baseman Jamie Skyrm (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Baptist) doubled, singled and scored three runs for the Wolverines while sophomore DH Pat Messner (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) doubled and singled. Junior first baseman Jarrett Wiggers (Panama, N.Y./Panama Central) scored twice.

Sophomore Andy Lightholder (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) pitched two innings of relief while junior Neil Hoagland (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) pitched the eighth. Freshman Cody Koontz (Moundsville, W. Va./John Marshall) started the ninth before yielding to Tindall.

Grove City will host Waynesburg Wednesday afternoon in a PAC 9-inning game at noon.
