Wolverines rally for 5-4 win

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team stayed atop the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday afternoon by securing a 5-4, 11-inning victory over visiting Waynesburg (11-11-1, 3-4 PAC) at College Field.

Grove City (15-5, 7-3 PAC) trailed 4-1 entering the bottom of the ninth but a three-run double by freshman second baseman Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) tied the game. In the 11th, sophomore third baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) roped a single to left that scored Wilson from third with the game-winning run.

Waynesburg scored singled runs in the second and fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Wolverines cut the lead in half in the sixth as Pierrot scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler). Waynesburg extended the lead to 4-1 entering the bottom of the ninth, however.

Grove City senior right fielder Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) opened the inning with a walk. Mertz singled while first baseman Dan Bartkowiak (Fredonia, Pa./Fredonia) then reached on a hit batter, loading the bases. Wilson followed with his three-run double to right center. With one out, Wilson was thrown out at the plate after a single by junior Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison).

Grove City also stranded two runners in the 10th inning.

Junior reliever Justin Miller (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Senior starter Ryan Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) allowed two earned runs in eight innings for Grove City. Freshman Matt Tindall (Copley, Ohio/Copley) gave up one run in the ninth.

Schwamberger and Pierrot each had two of Grove City's nine hits.

The Wolverines will visit Waynesburg for a PAC doubleheader Thursday at 1 p.m.
