Grove City rally falls short against Presidents

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team fell to 19-7 overall and 8-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Friday afternoon with a 4-3 loss to visiting Washington and Jefferson (20-5, 8-2 PAC) at College Field.

Grove City trailed 4-0 entering the bottom of the ninth but rallied for three runs against the President bullpen. Senior right fielder Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) and sophomore catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) opened the inning with back-to-back doubles. Mertz scored Grove City's second run on an error while a sacrifice fly from junior left fielder Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) scored freshman second baseman Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis).

However, Grove City stranded freshman center fielder Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) at second base as President reliever Ron Mitko retired sophomore third baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) to end the game.

Mertz, Ott and Wilson all went 2-for-4 for Grove City.

Sophomore pitcher Chris Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow) pitched into the eighth inning but took the defeat. Bowser allowed four earned runs and eight hits in 7 1/3 innings. Junior reliever Justin Miller (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) pitched 1 2/3 innings.

Grove City will visit Washington and Jefferson Saturday afternoon for a PAC doubleheader at 1 p.m.
