Grove City splits at Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio -- The Grove City College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Oberlin Thursday afternoon. Grove City (21-9) dropped the opener, 7-1, but rebounded for a 4-1 victory in the second game.

In Game Two, junior pitchers Eric Hull (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) and Neil Hoagland (Cabot, Pa./Knoch) combined on a 4-hitter. Hull allowed one run and three hits in 4 2/3 innings, earning the win. Hoagland earned his first collegiate save by pitching 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.

Grove City jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first of the nightcap. Senior right fielder Jerry Ott (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) doubled in sophomore DH Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) while sophomore catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) and sophomore second baseman Jamie Skyrm (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Baptist) following with back-to-back RBI singles.

In the fourth, Skyrm singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch, giving Grove City a 4-0 lead.

Ott doubled twice in the win while Skyrm and junior Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) each had a pair of singles.

In the opener, Grove City senior shortstop Mike Ritter (Moon Township, Pa./Moon) singled in freshman center fielder Seth Thompson (Canton, Ohio/GlenOak) in the third inning for the Wolverines' lone run. Ritter and Thompson both went 2-for-3 while Mertz doubled and singled.

Freshman Zach Hillegas (Bridgeport, W. Va./Bridgeport) took the loss for Grove City, allowing three earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. He walked five and struck out three. Freshman Matt Tindall (Copley, Ohio/Copley) pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief, allowing two earned runs.

Grove City will visit Westminster in a nine-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference game Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. in New Wilmington. The Wolverines will then host Westminster in a PAC doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
