Wolverines sweep Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team opened the northern portion of the 2007 schedule Monday afternoon by sweeping Saint Vincent in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader. Grove City (6-1 overall) earned an 8-1 win in the opener before taking the nightcap, 7-3.

In the opener, junior starting pitcher Chris Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow) took a shutout into the seventh inning. Bowser yielded just three hits and struck out six in his seven innings of work.

Sophomore shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) belted a two-run homer in the second inning while junior second baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) roped a two-run double. Senior first baseman Dan Bartkowiak (Fredonia, N.Y./Fredonia), junior catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) and senior right fielder Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) all singled twice. Schwamberger drove in a pair of runs.

Grove City jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, then added single runs in both the third and fourth innings. Pierrot's double highlighted a three-run sixth inning.

Wilson launched a three-run homer in the bottom of the first as the Wolverines jumped out to a 4-1 lead in Game Two. Junior center fielder Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate) tripled while Schwamberger doubled and singled. Sophomore third baseman Cody Koontz (Moundsville, W. Va./John Marshall) also doubled for the Wolverines, who had nine hits in the nightcap.

Sophomore Zach Hillegas (Bridgeport, W. Va./Bridgeport) earned the victory, allowing just one hit in 4 1/3 innings. Hillegas walked five batters and allowed two earned runs. Freshman Michael Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief, allowing one unearned run.

Grove City was designated as the "home" team in each game. The doubleheader had been scheduled for Grove City but field conditions forced the game to be moved to Saint Vincent. The games do not count in the PAC standings due to Saint Vincent's provisional status in NCAA Division III.

Grove City will complete its three-game series with the Bearcats Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. The teams will play a single 9-inning game. Grove City hosts Bethany Friday at 3 p.m. in PAC action.
