Grove City improves to 7-1

LATROBE, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team completed a season sweep of Presidents' Athletic Conference member Saint Vincent Thursday afternoon by earning a 10-8 win over the host Bearcats. Grove City is now 7-1 overall. It is the Wolverines' best start since the program's reinstatement in 1959.

Junior second baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) belted a two-run home run in the top of the seventh, breaking a 5-5 tie. Pierrot also singled in the win while senior right fielder Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) doubled twice. Junior center fielder Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate) tripled and singled. Sophomore first baseman Brad Stombaugh (Mount Lebanon, Pa./Mount Lebanon) added a pair of hits in three plate appearances.

Freshman pitcher Jeff Baluch (Perryopolis, Pa./Geibel) earned the win, allowing two earned runs in six innings. Sophomore reliever Matt Tindall (Copley, Ohio/Copley) worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings to secure the save, his first of the season.

Grove City jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Moran and sophomore third baseman Cody Koontz (Moundsville, W. Va./John Marshall) both had run-scoring singles. Saint Vincent forged a 5-5 tie with a four-run sixth inning but Grove City quickly reclaimed the lead on Pierrot's homer.

Grove City will host Bethany Friday afternoon in a single, 9-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference game. The Wolverines will then visit Bethany for a PAC doubleheader Saturday. Games with Saint Vincent do not count in the PAC standings due to the Bearcats' provisional status in NCAA Division III.
