Saints complete sweep

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team fell to 10-8 overall Saturday afternoon with a 9-3 loss to visiting Thomas More (17-4, 10-2 PAC) at College Field in Presidents' Athletic Conference action. The victory gives Thomas More a sweep of the teams' three-game weekend series.

Thomas More took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but Grove City (2-5 PAC) quickly tied the game in the home half of the inning. Junior right fielder Pat Messner (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) doubled in junior center fielder Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate), cutting the lead to 2-1. Messner then scored on a single from junior catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler).

Thomas More took the lead for good with a five-run fifth inning that included four unearned runs. Two Grove City errors in the eighth led to two more Thomas More runs.

Freshman pitcher Jeff Baluch (Perryopolis, Pa./Geibel) took the loss for Grove City. Baluch allowed three earned runs in 7 1/3 innings. He fanned six. Freshman Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) pitched 1 2/3 innings of perfect relief.

Messner went 3 for 4 while sophomore DH Brad Stombaugh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) added a pair of singles. Senior first baseman Dan Bartkowiak (Fredonia, N.Y./Fredonia) cracked a run-scoring single in the sixth.

Grove City will host Waynesburg Monday in a PAC doubleheader at 1 p.m.
