Westminster sweeps Grove City

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Host Westminster took both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader against Grove City Saturday afternoon. Westminster pulled out a 3-2 win in the opener, then completed a weekend sweep of Grove City in the nightcap, 15-4.

In the opener, Grove City senior pitcher Justin Miller (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) fired a five-hit complete game in the opener but absorbed the loss. Miller allowed just two earned runs and no walks in seven innings.

Grove City took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as junior catcher Ray Mertz (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) cracked a two-run double that scored both junior second baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) and senior left fielder Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison). Mertz's double and Schwamberger's single were Grove City's lone hits of the game as Westminster pitcher Jake Zatchok held Grove City hitless over the final six innings.

Westminster (11-13, 6-9 PAC) scored once in the second, third and fourth innings to take the lead.

In Game Two, Westminster broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning against freshman starter Jeff Baluch (Perryopolis, Pa./Geibel Catholic). Baluch took the loss, allowing 11 runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Grove City (10-12, 2-8 PAC) broke up the shutout with four runs in the sixth. Sophomore shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) drove in one run with a single while Schwamberger walked with the bases loaded. Mertz drove in a run with a groundout while a fielder's choice from senior Jim Gunst (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) also drove in a run.

Grove City will host Waynesburg Tuesday in a PAC doubleheader at 1 p.m.
