Presidents sweep Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City College baseball team dropped both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader against visiting Washington & Jefferson Saturday afternoon at College Field. W&J (26-7, 13-2 PAC) used a bases-loaded walk in the top of the seventh to pull out a 4-3 win in the opener. W&J then limited Grove City (12-15, 4-11 PAC) to just five hits in a 6-0 nightcap victory.

In the opener, senior right fielder Chris Schwamberger (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) helped lead the Wolverines' 10-hit attack with a double, two singles, two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases. Junior center fielder Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate) doubled, singled and drove in two runs while sophomore shortstop Ben Wilson (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) added a double.

Junior pitcher Chris Bowser (Stow, Ohio/Stow) limited the Presidents to just six hits in 6 2/3 innings but fell to 4-3 with the defeat.

Grove City scored twice in the fifth to forge a 3-3 tie. Senior first baseman Dan Bartkowiak (Fredonia, N.Y./Fredonia) singled and later scored on a single by junior second baseman Bryan Pierrot (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth). Later in the inning Schwamberger, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored on Moran's double.

Schwamberger and Moran both collected a pair of hits in the nightcap for Grove City. Freshman pitcher Mike Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) took the defeat for Grove City, allowing six runs and 13 hits in six innings. Senior Justin Miller (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) pitched a perfect seventh in relief.

W&J scored once in the first and twice in the third. The Presidents then broke the game open with three runs in the sixth.

Grove City will visit Geneva Monday afternoon in non-conference action at 4 p.m.
